# DWM BG Remover

> DWM BG Remover (https://bgremove.dealwithmuhammad.com) is a free AI background remover that runs entirely in the web browser. It removes the background from photos, product shots, portraits, logos and signatures on the user's own device using the open-source BiRefNet lite model (MIT license) with Transformers.js, on the GPU via WebGPU or on the CPU via WebAssembly. Images are never uploaded, there is no watermark and no sign-up. It was built by Muhammad Ahmad, a web and mobile app developer in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

## What it does

- **Remove the background** — drop, choose or paste (Ctrl/⌘+V) one or many images. The AI finds the main subject and cuts it out. Images are processed one at a time, with a status for each (waiting, removing background, done or error).
- **Compare** — a before/after slider over a checkerboard (draggable and keyboard accessible), with zoom to fit and zoom in up to 8×.
- **Change the background** — keep it transparent, or put the subject on a solid colour (presets or a custom colour picker), a blurred copy of the original photo (adjustable blur), or a custom image (cropped to fill). Optional soft drop shadow.
- **Touch-up brush** — Erase leftover background or Restore parts the AI removed, with adjustable brush size, undo, redo and reset. Works with a mouse, pen or touch (one finger paints, two fingers move around).
- **Edge controls** — Edge softness (feathering) and Mask threshold (removes faint, see-through leftovers and makes edges crisper; useful for logos and signatures). Defaults keep the model's raw edges.
- **Download** — PNG or WebP with transparency, or JPG (no transparency, so it is flattened on white or on the chosen background), at full resolution. Files are named like photo-no-bg.png. Copy the result to the clipboard as a PNG, or download a whole batch as a ZIP.
- **Formats in** — JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC/HEIF (converted in the browser), plus other formats the browser can decode, such as AVIF.

## Privacy

- All processing happens locally in the browser. Images, file names and image contents are never uploaded to any server.
- The AI model files are downloaded from the Hugging Face CDN and the AI runtime from the jsDelivr CDN; nothing is sent to them except the file requests.
- The site records anonymous page views and button events (for example "download PNG"), never anything about the images.
- No account, no sign-up, no watermark.

## Limits

- The first use downloads the AI model once: about 115 MB on browsers with WebGPU (1024×1024 fp16 model), or about 192 MB where it runs on the CPU (512×512 fp32 model), plus a small runtime. It is then cached by the browser, so later visits start without downloading it again.
- Speed depends on the device: usually a few seconds per image on a GPU (WebGPU), and slower on the CPU (WebAssembly) in browsers without WebGPU.
- Images larger than 4096 pixels on the long side are scaled down to 4096 px to fit in browser memory; smaller images keep their full size.
- The model works best on a clear main subject. Very busy scenes, transparent objects (glass) or fine hair against a similar background may need the touch-up brush.
- Requires a modern browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari — desktop or mobile). Phones without WebGPU need enough free memory to run the model on the CPU.

## How to remove the background from an image

1. Open https://bgremove.dealwithmuhammad.com and drop images on the page, click "Choose images", or paste with Ctrl/⌘+V.
2. Wait for the AI to remove the background (the first time, it downloads its model once).
3. Optionally pick a new background (colour, blur or image), fix edges with the Touch up brush, then download PNG, WebP or JPG — or all images as a ZIP.

## FAQ

- **Is DWM BG Remover free?** Yes — completely free, with no ads, no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, at full resolution.
- **Are my images uploaded?** No. The AI runs in your browser (WebGPU or WebAssembly), so images never leave your device.
- **Why is the first image slower?** The browser downloads the AI model once (about 115 MB with WebGPU, 192 MB on the CPU) and caches it for next time.
- **How do I make a PNG transparent or remove a white background?** Add the image, keep the background on Transparent and download PNG or WebP. For logos and signatures, raise the Mask threshold in the Edges tab for crisp edges.
- **How do I change the background colour of a photo?** In the Background tab choose Color, pick a preset or a custom colour, then download.
- **Can I use the results commercially?** Yes. The results are yours, and the BiRefNet lite model is MIT-licensed, which allows commercial use.
- **How do I fix a bad edge?** Use the Touch up tab: Erase removes leftover background, Restore brings back removed parts; undo and redo are available.

## Technology

- Model: BiRefNet lite by ZhengPeng7 (MIT license, weights included). With WebGPU it runs a 1024×1024 fp16 ONNX export whose graph is rewritten to fit GPU shader limits (jiabins0303/birefnet-lite-1024-webgpu); without WebGPU, the 512×512 fp32 export (studioludens/birefnet-lite-512) on the CPU.
- Runtime: Transformers.js (Apache-2.0) with ONNX Runtime Web, in a Web Worker so the page stays responsive.
- App: Next.js, React, HeroUI and Tailwind CSS. Compositing, the touch-up brush and exports use the HTML canvas at the image's working resolution.
